  • Discover professional hands-on technical and conceptual approaches to the use of clay as a material.
  • Use various approaches to process, construction methods, refinement of surface and installation-based work.
  • Work with clay as a medium for sculptural applications not limited to traditional roles.
  • Work with professional guest artists on technique, idea development, critique and professional example.
  • Interact, network, and build community with other students in the field.
  • This course will culminate in a public exhibition of student work.


Undergraduate: ART 425, 3 units
Graduate: ART 625, 3 units

Participants in this workshop should have intermediate- to graduate-level standing as visual artists, or an interest in sculpture, clay or installation-based work. Previous experience working with clay is not required. Individuals from outside the visual arts are encouraged to apply with some experience in studio technique and practice. Visual arts alumni and professionals are also encouraged to apply.


  1. Submit a letter indicating your interest in the course, some information on your studio experience and background, and 5-10 low-resolution JPEG images on disc. You may also simply send a link to your online portfolio, if you have one.
  2. Send the materials listed in step one with your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts office by May 18, 2012. The deadline has passed.

Mika Negishi Laidlaw          www.mikanegishilaidlaw.com
Born and raised in Kobe, Japan, Mika Negishi Laidlaw has worked in the United States and in Japan. After completing her undergraduate study, Mika went back to Japan to work as a ceramic apprentice at Akishino Pottery, and studied traditional pottery under Masaya Imanishi from 1994 to 1997 in Nara-City, Japan. In 2000, she received her MFA in Ceramics from Kansas State University, where she met her lifetime mentor Yoshiro Ikeda. Mika’s other accomplishments include receiving a 2001 McKnight Artist Residencies for Ceramic Artist at Northern Clay Center, a Summer Artist Residence at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Art in 2002, being named a 2004 Emerging Artist at the annual conference of National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in Indianapolis, and receiving 2006 and 2011 McKnight Fellowships for Ceramic Artists. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Guam, and Spain.

Shane Keena          
Shane M. Keena studied at OTIS College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. He received his BFA and his MFA in ceramics at Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Crafts. His work has been featured in many of Lark Books “500 series” including 500 Cups, 500 Teapots, and 500 Bowls. A review of his work was recently featured in Crafts Art International Issue #80 (Ambiguous Territory: The work of Shane M. Keena). Exhibitions of his work include solo shows “Biota” and “Phyla” at The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Ojai, CA. He has also been included in a number of national and international juried exhibitions and been a prize winner at Lincoln Arts Feats of Clay XI, XII, and XXI, and was a prize winner in Ink & Clay 37. His work has been included and purchased in both the 2006 Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award and the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale 2008. Shane’s work reflects a keen interest in physical defense mechanisms found in the natural world and whose sculptures often reflect fight-or-flight postures of bravado. At the core of his work is the manifestation of an exploration of the self and the investigation of territoriality, defense mechanisms, and most importantly, vulnerability.

Gerit Grimm          www.geritgrimm.com
Gerit Grimm was born and grew up in Halle, German Democratic Republic. In 1995, she finished her apprenticeship, learning the traditional German trade as a potter at the “Altbuergeler blau-weiss GmbH” in Buergel, Germany and subsequently worked as a Journeyman for Joachim Jung in Glashagen, Germany. She earned an Art and Design Diploma in 2001 studying ceramics at Burg Giebichenstein, Halle, Germany. In 2002, she was awarded a German DAAD Government Grant for the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, where she received her MA. Gerit received her MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. She worked at major residencies like McColl Center, Bemis Center, Kohler Arts & Industry Program and Archie Bray Foundation. In 2009, NET Television created Fantasia in Clay, a Nebraska Story about her.

Rebecca Hutchinson          www.rebeccahutchinson.com
Rebecca Hutchinson teaches undergraduate and graduate ceramics at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. Her installation work engages concerns for ecosystem dynamics. Recent installations have been built at Bracciano Museum, Italy, Islip Museum of Art, Holter Museum of Art, Blue Star Contemporary Arts Center, Skidmore College, Fuller Craft Museum, Lowe Museum of Art, Northern Clay Center and Manchester Crafts Guild. Rebecca has been awarded grants and fellowships from The Pollock Krasner Foundation, Virginia Cultural Commission, UMass-Dartmouth, Society of Arts and Crafts and the North Carolina Arts Council. She has curated and juried exhibitions and participated in residencies including the Archie Bray Foundation. She has taught large scale and paper clay workshops internationally and at Anderson Ranch, Mendocino Art Center, Appalachian Craft Center, Clay Art Center, Southwest Craft Center, Peters Valley Art Center, Northern Clay Center and Mudflat Ceramics, among others.
