VISUAL ART/DESIGN

Drawing and Painting in Florence
Course Dates: June 14 to July 4, 2012

Participants will spend three weeks in Florence, Italy, studying Renaissance masterworks and draw and paint in a studio and around the town and countryside.

This course focuses on the verbal/visual semantics and syntax that form type and image into meaning and communication. This workshop will adopt and adapt form, ideas, and methodologies from other subjects, such as literature, performing arts, architecture, and the social, life, and physical sciences.

Exploring Photography from Three Centuries

Participants will work with world renowned instructors to create images that explore techniques from 19th century Calotype/salted prints to 21st century iPhone apps. Traditional darkroom work and Photoshop techniques will also be covered.

Clay as a Medium for Sculpture

This workshop will present several professional hands-on approaches to clay, both technically and conceptually. Topics will include mold making and casting, figurative work, abstraction, and clay's role as a medium for installation-based work.

DANCE

Essence and Spirit of Hip Hop with Rennie Harris Puremovement

This course will cover house, locking, popping, breakin', freestyle, and other hybrid dance forms found in hip hop. The course will also provide historical references and pinpoint the development of styles, regional trends, and other related hip hop cultures.

MUSIC

Classical Guitar 4-3-2-1: The Guitar in Quartet, Trio, Duo and Solo

While the focus of many classical guitar programs is solo playing, it has increasingly become important for students to become familiar with playing with others. Over the years, the major artists of the guitar have trended towards chamber playing with other guitarists in groups of two, three, or four. This workshop will allow students to train with the absolute best in the field of ensemble guitar groups, including the Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

Afro-Brazilian Rhythm Workshop: Afoxé, Samba and Beyond!

Starting from a base in African-derived sacred rhythms and melodies, participants will learn and perform a range of music styles from Salvador da Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Focus will be on performance technique and on understanding the role of each instrument within the full ensemble. The course is open to percussionists, string players, flutists, and vocalists.

Sound Design in Entertainment Media: The Art of Making Noise

This workshop focuses on the post-production design and editorial process for sound in film, television and multimedia design. The course will address the aesthetic approach to sound/sound design; how to spot a project for sound elements; how to record design and sound effect elements; the different parts of post-production sound: including design, dialog, and ADR; and how to perform and record foley.

Digital Cinematography Workshop
Course Dates: July 16 to July 29, 2012

This workshop will cover both the technical and aesthetic aspects of digital cinematography. Students will work with award-winning cinematographers who will discuss how the job of the cinematographer is changing with the use of new digital equipment, as well as address aesthetic issues such as understanding thematic elements of the script to be interpreted by the director. Other topics covered will include the collaboration between the director and cinematographer and how to develop a color palette for a film. Students will gain hands on experience with both the HDSLR and RED cameras.


Understanding Your Character for Animation

Chicago-Style Comedy

Stage Combat: Armed and Unarmed Theatrical Violence
Course Dates: July 2 to July 15, 2012

This course will introduce the wonderful world of armed and unarmed theatrical violence, using the precepts of the Society of American Fight Directors: safety, dramatic illusion, and historical accuracy. The workshop will offer training in unarmed combat and rapier/dagger work, among other techniques, for the stage and film.

Solo Performance: Writing, Touring and Performing a Solo Show
Course Dates: July 16 to July 29, 2012

The Actors' Gang Style and Commedia dell'Arte

This renowned group from Los Angeles will teach its signature commedia dell'arte style of creating new plays that address the world today through a prism of satire, popular culture and raucous stagecraft. Masks, madness and mayhem ensue!
