This class is designed for university students, instructors, and professional animators who want to expand their understanding of animation techniques. Prospective students for this workshop should have a basic understanding of “The Principles of Animation” and be able to demonstrate this knowledge with samples of their work.
- Submit a resume or cover letter that describes your previous animation experience. Include a list of animation classes you have completed and your level of expertise. Also, send a sample of your work. This may include 3D, cell, stop motion, and /or experimental animation. If no examples of your work are available, or if your work is incomplete, submit a letter of recommendation from a recent faculty member. Be sure to include an email address and/or phone number of the faculty member.

Andrew Gordon www.pixar.com
Andrew Gordon’s career at Pixar Animation Studios began in 1997 when he began work as an animator on Toy Story 2. Since that time he has had the privilege of working on nine blockbuster hits including Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Finding Nemo, for which he won “Outstanding Character Animation in Animated Motion Picture” from the Visual Effects Society for his work on the Speaking Whale scene. He recently wrapped production on the box office hit Toy Story 3. Mr. Gordon, a CSU Summer Arts alumnus, also teaches at the California College of Art in Oakland. He has lectured on the subject of animation around the world including China, Spain, Singapore, Australia, and Italy.
Mike Wellins www.laika.com
Mike Wellins is a prolific independent filmmaker, writer, and commercial director of animation. He has directed numerous films and professional commercials including episodes of the Eddie Murphy stop motion show The PJs, commercials for M&M candies, a video for the Powerpuff Girls, as well as a pilots for the Cartoon Network, Fox Television, and Warner Bros. Mr. Wellins is currently an Animation Director for Laika Studios in Portland, Oregon.

Rusty Mills is a five-time Emmy Award-winning producer, director, and animator. Mr. Mills produced some of the drop-dead funniest and most well-animated cartoons of the last two decades. The hilarious shows Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs should ring a bell! Under Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, Mr. Mills was a major force in making a huge cast of animated characters come to life, with techniques and gags reminiscent of the old Warner Bros. shorts. He is currently working on The Pink Panther with Rubicon/MGM Studios.
Charles A. Harvey
Retired animator, storyboard artist, and director Chuck Harvey is an Emmy Award-winning animator whose credits include the Disney classics: The Fox and the Hound, Robin Hood, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, The Little Mermaid, and Pete’s Dragon,. Mr. Harvey will return to Summer Arts with his awesome collection of work from Disney’s “Nine Old Men.”
Adam Burke www.pixar.com
Adam Burke's career at Pixar Animation Studios began in January 2003 as a character animator on the Academy Award® winning feature The Incredibles, reuniting him with Brad Bird whom he met while working on The Iron Giant. Mr. Burke went on to work on the Golden Globe® winning Cars, and Oscar®winners Ratatouille, WALL•E, and Up. Mr. Burke has also animated characters for the Pixar short films Day & Night and Mater and the Ghostlight, and has worked on various projects for the Theme Parks division. In addition to working in 2D and 3D animation, he has taught animation at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and has been involved with Pixar's summer internship program for the last four years. Most recently, Mr. Burke worked as an animator on the critically acclaimed, box office hit Toy Story 3.
