Florence in Fresno: Drawing and Painting













Florence in Fresno: Drawing and Painting | June 28 to July 11, 2009
  • Spend two intensive weeks studying concepts and techniques of observational drawing and painting developed during the Florentine Renaissance.

  • Work alongside a select group of Italian students and faculty from the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.

  • Build an understanding of the structure of the human form, sharpen perceptual abilities, and create pictorial unity while working from the live model under expert guidance.

  • Explore the aesthetic potential and technical applications of media such as charcoal, oil, and fresco painting.

  • Examine issues of observational drawing and painting, and gain insight into how the Renaissance tradition is being reinterpreted and renewed for our time.

  • This workshop will culminate in a gallery exhibit of student work.

who should apply
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced students who are interested in developing their understanding of, and abilities in observational drawing and painting. Students should be self-motivated, open to exploring new concepts and techniques, and willing to invest the necessary time and effort to work through difficult perceptual, technical, and compositional problems in order to achieve successful outcomes.

how to apply
  1. Submit a portfolio containing the following items:

    1. Five to ten digital images of the your individual creative work on CD (recent two-dimensional, representational work preferred)

    2. A letter of recommendation from a recent faculty member or other professional in the visual arts who is familiar with you and the quality of your work.

    3. A one-page letter that expresses your interest in the workshop and describes your individual artistic experiences and educational background. Be sure to include all your contact information including email.

  2. Send the materials listed in Step 1 with your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts Registration Office by Friday, May 1, 2009. THE DEADLINE TO APPLY TO THIS COURSE HAS PASSED.

Andrea Granchi
Chair of one of the seven painting schools at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He has exhibited his multimedia work extensively in Italy and abroad, and has executed public commissions in fresco and stained glass. He is also a well-known and respected restorer of ancient and modern artwork.
