This is an upper division art history course that also may be taken by graduate students and individuals who are not currently enrolled in a university. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed one or both halves of an introductory survey of western (especially European) art history at a university or community college, or have acquired comparable academic preparation through other college coursework. Individuals with an established interest in European art, culture, and/or history also are encouraged to apply.

Submit a written proposal (one-page typed essay) in which you summarize your academic background for the course (include a concise list of college courses related to this course’s coverage), your expectations of the course, and your main reasons for applying (how does this course serve your academic major/minor and/or relate to your personal interests?). Please provide one letter of recommendation from an individual who can address such qualities as your responsibility and your interest in the study of art history.

Marsha Steinberg
Coordinator of studio art at the California State University International Program, Florence. She is a well-known painter and printmaker who has lived in Florence since 1974. She has taught figure drawing and painting in Italy since 1986.

Domenic Cretara
Domenic Cretara is a contemporary figurative artist and Professor of Art at California State University, Long Beach. He works primarily in drawing and painting. He has received the Outstanding Professor Award and Distinguished Faculty Teaching and Creative Achievement Awards at CSULB. Among other tributes, Professor Cretara has also been the recipient of a Fulbright-Hayes Grant to Florence, Italy, and fellowships to Padua, Italy, and Cassis, France.
Professor Cretara is a particularly active exhibiting artist with many solo exhibitions at galleries and museums in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle and Boston, including a retrospective at the Las Vegas Art Museum, and an exhibition at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington. His works are in the collections of major institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Wiggins Print and Drawing Collection of the Boston Public Library. Professor Cretara’s images not only have graced the covers of magazines and illustrated poems but have also been reproduced in many publications, including The Art of Responsive Drawing, Figure Drawing, and Painting: Perceptual and Technical Fundamentals, (Prentice Hall Publications); Sex: Portraits of Passion (Watson Guptill Publications); feature articles for American Arts Quarterly and American Artist; and reviews in the Los Angeles Times and the Boston Herald. He is presently serving as the Resident Director of the California State University International Program in Florence, Italy.

Travel and Housing for Art History in Florence
Please call the Summer Arts Fresno office at 559-241-6090 for the travel and housing application packet for Art History of Florence. Summer Arts has arranged for a discounted group travel fare and has arranged for lodging in a hotel within walking distance of the academic facilities. Housing and travel do not necessarily have to be arranged through Summer Arts, however we will still need your finalized information prior to departure.
Travel is via roundtrip air from Los Angeles or San Francisco. Participants who choose to travel with the arranged group will depart on Friday, June 12 and return on Saturday, July 4, 2009. Earlier departures and later returns can be arranged through Travel Cuts, USA, however, participants will be responsible for paying any additional travel charges, and will be responsible for securing and paying for housing during any additional dates. CSU housing is not available outside of the dates of the workshop.
Participants will be housed quadruple, triple, double, and single occupancy in Florence. Breakfast is provided daily in the cost of the housing. Lunch and dinner are not provided. Participants have the option to choose to lodge with roommates of their choice or to be assigned to a room according to gender. All housing will be arranged in the order that reservations are received.
Participants are required to purchase insurance covering medical emergencies while participating in this CSU program.
