  • This workshop will be an intense exploration of how text plays an important role in the development of ensemble-based scenework.

  • Special focus will be given to the study of improvisation and Viewpoints and and their effect on ensemble work.

  • Discussions about the day-to-day business of being an actor will also be integrated.

  • This course culminates in a student performance from Lanford Wilson’s landmark ensemble play, Balm in Gilead.


who should apply
Student and professional actors or directors who plan on careers in the professional theatre should apply. This is an advanced class that will demand a high level of concentration, focus, and commitment. Above all, HAVE FUN!

  1. Send a picture, resume, letter of recommendation, and a letter of interest. After a review of applications, Dr. Mayer will contact the candidates.

  2. Send the materials listed in Step One and your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts Registration Office by Monday, May 19, 2008. The deadline has passed for this course

Gary Sinise
Gary Sinise
Gary Sinise is a co-founder of Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Gary is a three-time Tony-nominee for Steppenwolf's productions of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Grapes of Wrath and for Best Director of Buried Child. Gary has also directed some of Steppenwolf's most notable productions, including Tracers and Sam Shepard's True West, which he later performed in for Steppenwolf's New York debut. He's appeared in many films and was Oscar-nominated for Forrest Gump. On the small screen he's won Best Actor awards for George Wallace and Truman, and currently appears in CSI: New York. He plays electric bass in The Lt. Dan Band and is committed to Operation Iraqi Children, a grassroots program he co-created with Laura Hillenbrand that sends school supplies to our troops for the children of Iraq.


Alexandra Billings
Ms. Billings is the Viewpoints Associate at The Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago, and has taught at the Steppenwolf Schools in both Chicago and Los Angeles since 1998. Alexandra has studied Viewpoints under Tina Landau, one of the originators of Viewpoints along with Anne Bogart. She has also taught Viewpoints - as both an acting tool and a rehearsal technique - at Universities and theaters across the country since 1995, including the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, Louis University, Depaul University, and has been on staff at both Act One Studios and for the Illinois Theatre Alliance.
