  • Learn how to use digital cameras and Photoshop® to create photos for art gallery displays and commercial uses.

  • Learn how to photograph "on the move," including ways to approach and photograph people in foreign countries, understanding color and light, creative use of fill-flash, and digital concerns in travel environments.

  • Cover digital capture, using Lightroom®, producing the best results from RAW captures and using a non-destructive, efficient workflow to optimize images.

  • Create fine art prints with step-by-step help on basic color management, Photoshop techniques, and tips on optimum resolution for Epson printing.

  • Receive portfolio reviews, field shooting lessons, and printing color and B&W prints for your portfolio.

who should apply
This workshop is for beginning to advanced photographers using SLR digital cameras who want to explore the creative possibilities of digital travel photography, expand your Photoshop and Lightroom skills, and build a print portfolio. Students should have a good working understanding of their camera, exposure and composition and basic digital photography skills - image capture, downloading, and editing. A working knowledge of basic Photoshop and being comfortable working on your computer are essential.

how to apply
  1. Provide a one-page statement describing your art and/or photojournalism experience, skill levels in photography and Photoshop. Submit any other background information you think would be of interest to this workshop, and a portfolio of 10 to 20 images (image files on CD, DVD, website, or duplicate 35mm slides).

  2. Send the materials listed in Step One and your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts Registration Office by Monday, May 19, 2008.

Nevada Wier
Nevada Wier
Award-winning and widely published photographer and author. She specializes in photographing cultures and their environment throughout Southeast Asia, India, China, Nepal, Africa, New Zealand, Central Asia, Mongolia, South America, and other fascinating regions of the world.

She is a widely published author and photographer in magazines including National Geographic, National Geographic Adventure, Geo, Islands, Outdoor Photographer, Outside, and Smithsonian. Her books include The Land of Nine Dragons: Vietnam Today (winner of the 1992 Lowell Thomas Best Travel Book award), and Adventure Travel Photography. Her next book will be A Nomadic Vision, a collection of travel episodes that relate to her evolution as a photographer.

Ms. Wier's travels down the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia on assignment with National Geographic magazine was featured in a National Geographic Explorer television episode. She was one of the photographers in Through the Lens for the National Geographic Channels and on the Canon Photo Safaris (OLN & ESPN). She has been a regular guest on The Travel Channel. She is a Fellow of The Explorer's Club and a member of the Society of Woman Geographers.

In her past, she worked 20 years as a Course Director/Instructor for Outward Bound, as a boatman for AZRA on the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, and as a professional ski patroller in New Hampshire. Ms. Wier is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. (www.nevadawier.com)

Tim Grey
Tim Grey
Author or co-author of over a dozen books on digital imaging for photographers, including the best-selling Photoshop CS3 Workflow, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Workflow, and Color Confidence: The Digital Photographer's Guide to Color Management (2nd ed.). He has a strong background in computers and photography and has developed a great deal of knowledge on all aspects of digital imaging. He has also had hundreds of magazine articles on digital imaging for photographers published in magazines such as Outdoor Photographer, Digital Photo Pro, and PC Photo. Mr. Grey also publishes an almost-daily Digital Darkroom Questions (DDQ) e-mail newsletter, where he answers questions related to the digital darkroom, and the Digital Darkroom Quarterly print newsletter. He is a highly sought-after workshop instructor on digital imaging. His appearances at the major photo industry tradeshows include Photoshop World as a member of the Photoshop World Dream Team of instructors. Michael Jones
Michael Jones
A custom printmaker with West Coast Imaging, he has first-hand experience translating digital image files into fine art prints. His work includes photographing landscapes, portraits, weddings, and commercial projects. His goal is to demonstrate how much more potential each image file has for making beautiful inkjet prints.
