Spend three weeks in Florence, Italy and earn four units of credit
studying the masterpieces of Renaissance art while painting and drawing
from the figure and landscape with distinguished Italian and American
artists.

Work alongside a select group of Italian art students from the Accademia
di Belle Arti.

Paint and draw in the presence of the greatest examples of western
figurative art. Former participants describe it as a formative
life-changing experience.

Examine issues of observational drawing and painting, and develop formal
and technical skills while working from landscape and live models under
the expert guidance.

Visit the masterpieces of Renaissance art located in the museums,
churches, public squares, and palazzi of Florence.
- Apply the insights and inspiration gained from the visits to your own creative work.
Students will be selected based on examples of their work and faculty recommendations. You do not need to be an advanced student to succeed in this course. This program welcomes all motivated students from beginners to advanced who can demonstrate competent drawing skills. The teaching is one on one, and is given by professors with many years of experience with students at every level.

together with a brief cover letter explaining why you want to study in
Florence, and a one-page faculty letter of support.

Andrea Granchi
Born in Florence and graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in 1969. Winner of a grant for young artists from the city of Florence, and the Stibbert Prize for painting, he has taught for many years. Formerly professor of painting at many fine arts academies in Italy, he is presently chair of one of the seven painting schools at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. Professor Granchi has exhibited his multimedia work extensively in Italy and abroad, and has executed public commissions in fresco and stained glass. He is also a well known and respected restorer of ancient and modern artwork.

Gianna Scoino
Professor of painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including shows at the Pitti Palace in Florence, the Pompidou Center in Paris, Turkey, Germany, and Brazil. Since the 1990s her work has combined text and collaged images into a personal language of materials and signs conveying an intimate spiritual content. In 2006 she had a solo exhibit titled "The Cruel Gaze" at the Archaeological Museum of Fiesole, and in 2007 participated in the "Oggetto Libro" exhibit that inaugurated the new San Giorgio Library in Pistoia.

Summer Arts has arranged for a discounted group travel fare and has arranged for lodging in a hotel within walking distance of the academic facilities. Housing and travel do not necessarily have to be arranged through Summer Arts, however we will still need your finalized information prior to departure.
Travel is via roundtrip air from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Participants who choose to travel with the arranged group will depart on Friday, June 13 and return on Saturday, July 5, 2008. Earlier departures and later returns can be arranged through Travel Cuts, USA, however, participants will be responsible for paying any additional travel charges, and will be responsible for securing and paying for housing during any additional dates. CSU housing is not available outside of the dates of the workshop.
Participants will be housed triple, double, and single occupancy in Florence. Lunch and dinner are not provided. Participants have the option to choose to lodge with roommates of their choice or to be assigned to a room according to gender.
